Started with a focus on #datasovereignty, the #digitalsovereignty discussions became broader. As #cloud usage matures, questions about technical, operational, assurance, supply chain and geopolitical sovereignty arise. As they set new laws and policies inspired by digital sovereignty, policymakers must consider interdependencies across data, technical, operational assurance, supply chain and geopolitical sovereignty, to ensure that their regulations are effective. (https://lnkd.in/d6HFQH5V) IT executives must understand the regulatory landscape on digital sovereignty, identify the candidate workloads to migrate to sovereign solutions, and scan the #sovereigncloud solutions that global and local tech providers are bringing to market (https://lnkd.in/d7X79nsy) Glad to have had the chance to collaborate with Rahiel Nasir (Naz), IDC global lead analyst for digital sovereignty, and Ralf Helkenberg, IDC Europe lead analyst for privacy and data security, to produce these two studies.

I find myself unable to wait to publish an article on #AI when algorithms suggest that Friday is NOT a good time to excite interest on LI. The irony. At Blackhat, #darpa has dropped news of its #AICyberChallenge (AIxCC): a 2 year competition to use AI to leapfrog the next generation of #cybersecurity tools into the future. Importantly, DARPA name drops #criticalinfrastructure as key digital terrain for the comp. There’s both a Funded Track, for up to 7 'small' businesses, and an “open mic” competition. The Open Track will winnow down the wanna-bes into 20 teams (semi-finals), and then 5 (finals). Both eliminations will be held at #defcon and have prizes: in 2024, USD $2M each for the top 5/20; in 2025, USD $4M, $3M, and $1.5M for the top 3/5. DARPA says that #google, #microsoft, #openai, and #anthropic will ‘collaborate’ to get this done, working with the competitors. Also interesting is the AIxCC's focus on open source and the mentoring role that OpenSSF will have. Hey, there’s history here. A thousand years ago ... well back in 2016, DARPA held its Grand Cyber Challenge. This was an all-machine cyber hacking and security tournament which was won by Mayhem, associated with Carnegie Mellon. Mayhem was then thrown into DEFCON’s Capture The Flag final, where it came last out of 15 teams. Despite this, in announcing the DEFCON results, Mayhem was praised for a ‘spectacular performance’, drawing ahead of some human teams ‘many times’ before fading. There’s a NEED here. You can see the signals in the continuity of DARPA’s interest, in the credibility of Black Hat and DEFCON, in the popularization of Generative AI, and in the GM&OAI's support of AIxCC. Underlying all of this is the need to mitigate the hurt inflicted everyday on individuals and business by cyber crime. And there’s tantalising promise for Australia: it's in the #aukus inclusion of AI and Cyber as two of the Advanced Capabilities being worked on in addition to nuke-powered subs: in AI being listed as an Australian 'critical technology in the national interest'; in support for sovereign cyber capabilities; in Australia's Security of Critical Infrastructure Act and its mandated Risk Management Program; and in the Government’s intent to make Australia the most cyber secure nation in the world by 2030. So, Australia has the goal and policy framework to bring AI and cyber security together. Hopefully, this promise will be reflected in the new Cyber Security Strategy coming out this year. And I hope that Australia’s cyber bureaucracy is involved with DARPA up to their collective Layer 5. As for Business, back in June 2017 I wrote that leaders need to be asking “are our cyber security vendors investing reasonably in AI/machine learning?” I haven’t changed my mind. Neither has DARPA.
