The 2nd SDSC-Connect workshop named “Paving the way for Digital Manufacturing” will take place at the Kursaal, Bern. It will address the sometimes unforeseen challenges in a data-driven world and leading industry experts will share their views on the 4th industrial revolution we are experiencing.
The CV Summit is a unique event held in the heart of the Crypto Valley – in Zug hosting almost 1000 attendees. Switzerland and Lichtenstein have established themselves as the Crypto Valley, through the openness of the Swiss government it has become home of some of the most renowned crypto and blockchain companies such as: Aragon, Ethereum and many more who have established themselves in Zug.
More than one million families are separated due to conflicts. The ICRC and the EPFL through C4DT partnership have set themselves a challenge to analyse publicly available data through analytics techniques to identify missing persons that would arguably not have been identified using current, conventional methods. The goal of this project is to facilitate the search for missing individuals by building scalable, accurate systems tailored for that purpose.

The software from the laboratories attached to C4DT are in three categories: showcase, fresh from the lab; incubator, being worked on by C4DT; market, stable and supported software.
C4DT’s executive director Olivier Crochat took part in the “Infrarouge” debate on the Swiss National TV channel RTS. The topic “profiles, passwords, emails: all hacked?” is largely inspired by the recent data leak named “Collection # 1-5”, which exposed nearly 2.2 billion email addresses and passwords. A quarter of Swiss parliamentarians were affected by a massive theft of computer data.
Being able to understand fundamental data protection challenges, interpret the technical implications of cyber, data protection and privacy law, advise third parties, and communicate properly with technical experts who develop and maintain digital systems are crucial for lawyers. With these goals mind this course is developed by C4DT in close cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and builds on the first course held for its lawyers at the end of February 2018.

Building trust in the digital world together Partners
C4DT’s blockchain-based e-voting technology just passed its first real test “with flying colors” during the elections of EPFL’s school assembly. The innovative DTOP technology called “cothority” demonstrated that it could be trusted by the technologically demanding EPFL community.
Developed by Professor Ford’s DEDIS team, cothority enabled the certification of the election by distinct nodes, operated independently by different school bodies.
The International Red Cross (ICRC) is confronted to unique information-security challenges when providing aid to disaster victims. A group of C4DT-affiliated researchers has been closely working with ICRC to better understand specific computer security challenges.
For that work, Steven Leblond and his colleagues led by professors Ford and Hubaux were awarded the Distinguished Best Paper Award at the 39th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy in San Francisco.
