Wide-area data stores enhance fault tolerance and response times, and they enhance scalability. Yet even in the absence of failures, these wide-area deployments can degrade the interaction latency between nearby clients. Cristina Basescu presents Crux, the first general framework that addresses these issues by building locality-preserving data stores.

Citizens have a right to an explanation of the decisions affecting them. However, if AIs are to be used in decision procedures, how can we explain complex AI systems to the general public, while so many computer scientists find them inscrutably opaque? In this presentation, an optimistic approach to this seemingly hopeless question will be presented.
EPFL’s IC School invites you to the 2019 edition of the IC Summer Research Institute (SuRI), held in Lausanne (EPFL, BC 420) on June 13-14. The Cyber-Defence Campus (CYD Campus) organizes its first conference on the 6th of June at the KKThun in Thun. It will focus on „Applied Cryptography“ and provides an ideal platform for participants from academia, industry and government to exchange information and present results on timely topics. The conference is free for governmental employees, students and academics. For more information and to register please click here…
While showing great promise, smart contracts are difficult to program correctly, as they need a deep understanding of cryptography and distributed algorithms, and offer limited functionality, as they have to be deterministic and cannot operate on secret data. In this talk, Ceyhun Alp presents Protean, a general-purpose decentralized computing platform that addresses these limitations.
This workshop will be held on the 20th of May 2019 the the EPFL and aims to inform researchers and industrial partners, active in the field of cybersecurity / digital trust, about current opportunities to fund multilateral projects (collaborative projects involving multiple research and industry partners) using H2020 as well as other Swiss and EU sources of financing.
Please note that this is a closed C4DT community event.
The UZH Blockchain Center is organising a Swiss-wide Symposium on Blockchain Research to take place on the 14.05.2019 in Zürich. In such an event, two principles are fundamental: (1) Academic, interdisciplinary programme; (2) Federal coverage. It is just fair (and interesting) to learn what Universities of this country are doing in the area now. This allows to form a sense of community, find possible synergies and plainly learn. Please register for this event.

C4DT-affiliated Jean-Pierre Hubaux, a Full Professor at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and lead of the Data Protection in Personalized Health (DPPH) initiative in Switzerland, and David Bernick, Chief Information Security Officer at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, take on leadership of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) Data Security Work Stream.
C4DT’s first workshop on the topic of Digital Identity will take place at the EPFL in Lausanne on Friday the 10th of May. The objective is to share insights in 4 application verticals, namely eHeath, IoT, e-Gov and Humanitarian, developing common understanding of digital ID, and to leverage opportunities for interaction and collaboration. Please note that this workshop is a closed event and by invitation only. More details will follow…
Researchers in the HexHive and Parallel Systems Architecture (PARSA) laboratories of EPFL’s School of Computer and Communication Sciences, in collaboration with IBM researchers, have identified a widespread computer security vulnerability affecting laptop, desktop and server hardware.
The CV Summit is a unique event held in the heart of the Crypto Valley – in Zug hosting almost 1000 attendees. Switzerland and Lichtenstein have established themselves as the Crypto Valley, through the openness of the Swiss government it has become home of some of the most renowned crypto and blockchain companies such as: Aragon, Ethereum and many more who have established themselves in Zug.
This joint CMTA – C4DT conference will be held on the 6th of June 2019 at EPFL’s SwissTech Convention Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m, following on from the EPFL School of Computer and Communication Sciences’ Research Day. Speakers and panelists at the conference will discuss the first experiences made in Switzerland with the tokenization of securities and the professional custody of digital assets, as well as the future shape of trading platforms for digital assets.
The JPEG committee calls for industry/academic participation to its 3rd workshop on media blockchain.
This free public workshop will be held in Geneva on Wednesday the 20th of March 2019 in conjunction with the 83rd ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG1 (JPEG) Meeting.
Please register at the latest by Friday 15 March 2019 by filling out the following 2 forms: Form 1 (select “Invited expert” as membership category) and Form 2 (for logistical reasons).
The C4DT software team gives support to both the laboratories and the industrial partners. For the laboratories, the C4DT team works hand-in-hand with their developers to create and update best practices, and do regular meetings.
For the industrial partners, the C4DT team offers help, and in conjunction with the Academy, training for specific software packages.
The software from the laboratories attached to C4DT are in three categories: showcase, fresh from the lab; incubator, being worked on by C4DT; market, stable and supported software.
While the projects from the labs target the publication of a paper, the demonstrator targets real use-cases with real people. You can always have a look at https://demo.c4dt.org to see an updated list of the available projects in the demonstrator.
EPFL is committed to supporting Switzerland’s efforts in the area of cyber defence. C4DT’s executive director Olivier Crochat took part in the “Infrarouge” debate on the Swiss National TV channel RTS. The topic “profiles, passwords, emails: all hacked?” is largely inspired by the recent data leak named “Collection # 1-5”, which exposed nearly 2.2 billion email addresses and passwords. A quarter of Swiss parliamentarians were affected by a massive theft of computer data.
In this interview Jean-Pierre Hubaux, professor at EPFL, academic director of the Center for Digital Trust, is asked about the recent data leak named “Collection # 1-5”: a collection of 2.2 billion unique usernames and associated passwords which is freely distributed on hacker forums and torrents. According to a RTS survey, 3.3 million Swiss electronic accounts are included.

By Georgia Fragkouli Abstract Can we improve Internet transparency without worsening user anonymity? For a long time, researchers have been proposing transparency systems, where traffic reports produced at strategic network points help assess network behavior and verify service-level agreements or neutrality compliance. However, such reports necessarily reveal when certain traffic appeared at a certain network (…)
